The Nicole Hodgins Cagle Memorial Fund

Nicole Hodgins Cagle

This memorial fund has been established to honor and celebrate the life of Nicole Marie Hodgins Cagle, our Niki.  Nicole, a young mother who died of breast cancer, leaves a legacy of kindness and caring for all those around her.  We hope to build a Hospice House in Roanoke, Virginia to carry on Nicole’s desire to celebrate whatever days we have to live, and to make good memories for those left behind.  Not only do we want to help the terminally ill, but also those living in poverty and fear.

Will our dream of a Hospice House come true?  We pray that with your help this will be accomplished.

Nicole was born in Canada on the 9th of April, 1970 and died in Roanoke, Virginia on the 11th of June, 2009 after 5 years of chemo, radiation, many procedures and treatments.  Her two little boys, Andrew 9, and Matthew 7, and her husband Mike, were the focus of her life.  She planned parties and trips to celebrate every event of her family and friends.

Nicole loved being involved with the American Cancer Society and worked hard to raise money for a cure.  She spoke at the Pink Ribbon Luncheon in 2007 to raise funds.  With her kids and Mike, they raised money for the Relay for Life, receiving awards for the amount of funds raised.  She bought new pajamas and showed up to speak at a fund raiser, Pajama Jam.  She designed and made beautiful bracelets in pink and silver and sold them, giving a part of the profits for cancer research.  She wanted a cure and wanted to live.

Nicole knew she was running out of time and worked harder on making good memories for her boys: a family trip to Florida to Disneyworld and Cape Canaveral in November; Christmas morning at home with just Mike and the boys.  Between chemo and homework, Nicole helped the boys finish the school year and she was so proud of them.

The end was coming nearer and Nicole chose the music and readings for her services.  Hospice arrangements were made and she would be home as long as possible.  She wouldn't die at home, remembering the boys were at home and she wanted to protect their memory bank.  There is no Hospice House in Roanoke so she had to go to the hospital.  Can we change that final journey for others?

Nicole wanted a memory box to hold her treasures for her sons, which included letters and cards.  Her friends had a beautiful wood box made and engraved.  She had to peak over the clouds to see it, but she would approve.  However, our best memories of Nicole are the treasures she left in our hearts.
